![]() Aesthetically, it draws from how the Soviets of the era imagined their country’s future. Set in an alternate 1955, Atomic Heart depicts a world where technology advanced much more quickly but also quite differently after World War Two. Fallout’s version of the 21st century drew more from what people in the 1950s thought it would look like than it did from anything that could exist in reality.Ītomic Heart, meanwhile, almost seems like it could take place in the Fallout universe’s version of the Soviet Union. Robots, laser rifles, and nuclear-powered cars share a world with vacuum tubes and computers from the 1970s. ![]() While American culture remained more-or-less locked in the 1950s, technology advanced much more quickly, but not in the way it did historically. The Fallout series is one of the few examples of an alternate history, taking place in a timeline that diverged from reality in the late 1940s. RELATED: Atomic Heart Trophy List Revealed What Fallout and Atomic Heart Have in Common Therefore, Bethesda might want to look closely at Atomic Heart when designing the next Fallout game. Fallout is steeped in Americana, while Atomic Heart depicts a hypothetical Soviet utopia, but 1950s retrofuturism is at the core of both their identities. Mundfish’s Atomic Heart releases next week, and while the upcoming game owes more to BioShock than Fallout, there are certainly parallels.īeyond being sci-fi first-person shooters, both games depict their own versions of an alternate universe Cold War. Fortunately, it’s not as if Fallout has a monopoly on retro-futuristic dystopias. With the latter game still years away, it will be quite some time before the next single-player Fallout game. However, while Todd Howard confirmed Fallout 5 is on its way eventually, it’s not coming until some point after Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda Softworks released Fallout 4 in November 2015, with Fallout 76 launching three years later. ![]()

If it sounds good to you and you don't mind this lack of detail, you'll probably enjoy this.at least more than I did. I can't say I'd recommend Thrall by Steven Shrewsbury, but I'm also the type that likes a lot of detail - i.e. He goes about killing almost haphazardly, especially at first and there's no real motive behind it except that he's this big tough hero that can't be stopped even in his old age. I didn't hate Thrall, I enjoyed the aged warrior, Gorias La Gaul, but then again he wasn't easy to like immediately. It wasn't that it didn't make sense, it was just not a great description. There were many instances of this type of word usage. From above: ".for some reason she couldn't stop this action". The oddest phrases and descriptions were given left and right. Then there was the awkward phrasing as mentioned in my Goodreads quote. This resulted in a somewhat awkward pace, if only the author had set the scene a bit more, it wouldn't sound like info-dumping. Sometimes the characters would be discussing their next move or explaining some type of history and without any set up of the world around them, it seemed to me they were taking a break in the middle of nowhere to just "talk this out". The focus was almost completely on the characters, but even going so far as to not even set up a scene. I knew going into this somewhat short book (under 300 pages in trade paperback) that it was heroic fiction, so I already wasn't expecting a lot in terms of the world and instead a focus on the characters. ![]() I commented that there's not enough world-building and that may not even be saying enough. ![]() For some reason, she couldn't stop this action." I wanted to like this so much, great ideas, but poor execution." Awkward wording left and right, like, "Kayla returned to her work, but this time, her pale fingers shook. Even though I realize it's character-driven, there's still not enough worldbuilding. Here's a quote I made on Goodreads when I was almost done: Thrall has a great cover and a great premise, what's not to love? I highly enjoyed David Gemmell's Legend - also dealing with an aged hero - and I really didn't think I could go wrong. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She begins a tangled love affair with three uniquely different men - one of whom she knows will be her murderer."
